Seedlings

I thought it appropriate that the first post on my fledgling little blog be about my new seedlings.  Now that I’m finally in a house with an actual yard, I get to try growing my own food this year!  I see grass as pretty pointless, aside from avoiding erosion, and I’d much prefer to have a yard full of productive and beautiful plants.  Planting from seeds is clearly the most economical choice when starting a garden, but planting tiny, vulnerable seeds in a big, unpredictable garden – that sounds a little dicey!  Enter the Seedling Starter System.  I am so happy I came across this article in my daily Google reader about starting seedlings indoors.  The practice allows one to start up your seeds indoors before the weather is completely hospitable, and then plant more hearty, already growing plants outside in the prepared garden.  Preparing the garden itself (which is mostly still grass) is another endeavor entirely, deserving of its own story.

Back to my little seedling:

The babies, all in a row,

The contents of my starter: cantaloupe, jalapeno peppers, green peppers, okra, pickling cucumbers, 2 types of tomatoes, carrots, zucchini, cilantro and basil.  I picked veggies and herbs that I can get a lot of practical use out of, both fresh and preserved. And just check out the sweet set-up these babies have to make their world-wide debut into:

And yes, that is an actual plant light, not that they need light yet since they are still buried in the soil.  We shall follow their progress in the weeks and months to come.  Hopefully as they make their way all the way into my tummy in deliciously prepared food!

So welcome to my seedling blog, thanks for stopping by and please leave your thoughts and comments on your way out!

Yea Jenny! My first commenter! I was going back and forth on the title, especially since I came up with it while trying to fall asleep at about 1am a few nights ago. I’m glad I stuck with it though, makes me sound super-hero like!
